Freedom

First a scary vet picture that my owners got from a “friend”. Thought it looked like me! It’s not!

My owner mom likes to let me run free. I am usually pretty good. I know my name and most of the time I listen. Almost always. I explore but I look for her and come back.

Arrow takes off. My owner mom thinks it’s because he hates us, but really he’s just crazy. She keeps trying. She let us loose in a soccer field one day. Arrow was pretty good. The next time she let us play there. Arrow ran out the other side and down the street. A man opened his door, and Arrow ran in his house.

Last week Arrow ran out of our house in Denver. He likes to run to the park. Crossing at least one street. He ran down the back ally. We went after him. Then he ran back up the ally. We hoped he was coming back to our door, but he raced right past us, down to the front of our building, and around the block. We caught up with him in the park, playing with the dogs. At night lots of our neighbors take their dogs to the park for Yappy Hour. Illegal off-leash mingling in Cheesman Park.

Today my mom took us to a lake with a big sandy place to run around. We played. Then Arrow noticed the frozen lake. He ran across it. Then he came back. He ran across again. All this time my mom’s yelling: Deefor NO. Arrow come back. I stayed on the shore (like a good dog—where's my treat?). There are houses on the other side. Arrow ran around and finally came back across the lake with half a coconut in his mouth.

He ran up to some people taking a walk, and my mom was able to step on his leash. She left it on to catch him. (This a picture of the first time he came back. My mom was screaming so much later. She put the camera away.) He was sure tired when he got home.

Freedom means a lot to Arrow. Like Janis Joplin says: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to loose. The world is a big adventure for him. My mom worries that he will get hit by a car someday. He doesn't think about what he might lose.

Hi Deefor!

OMG that first picture is creeeeepy!!! I just went to the vet a few days ago so it's giving me flashbacks!!!

That's funny about Arrow running into the wrong house. Well, maybe not so funny since I accidentally did that one time. Mom & I were walking back from the park when there was lots of snow on the ground. Someone opened their front door as we were walking by and I ran inside! I was sooo confused! Every house looked the same but once I was inside it smelled very wrong so I ran right back out. I was soooo embarrassed but I got no sympathy from my mom -she was laughing so hard she couldn't stand up straight.

I wont' make that mistake ever again!

Oh, Arrow, you are such a nut! You have to learn to listen to your Mom. Don't get lost!

Hi, Deefor!
Yes, that first picture is very funny!
Sure Arrow has no fear! Every time you tell us about him running away I get pretty worried!
Take care

hi Deefor, we're glad you are a good boy and coming back when your mom calls you. Arrow could get hit bit a car, or what if he fell throught a hole in the ice on the lake? He needs some better training, or maybe just to stay on leash - or a long line. it sounds like he's clueless as to what bad things could happen to him. can't you talk to him and tell him to behave? we're gonna worry about him now.

woofers,

Maybe Arrow should go to treat class. Mah MaMa sed I have to go to learn not to run so free. Now I sit and wait fer treats like a good dog insted of running in front of cars so mama has to tackle me. Dat was a fun run tho!!!!

Hi Deefor!

Where did the coconut come from? That is kinda weird considering you do not live in the tropics.

My mom had a mixed pup named "Girl" many years ago that always ran.. one time she ran away and down a few blocks to the hospital. Hospitals have automatic doors and she ran into the emergency room. Needless to say she got a call and she thought the worst.. luckily it was a call to come get her dog!

Hi Deefor,
My little sis, Trudy, is also a runner. She's kinda fat though, so she's not real fast. The other day Mama let us out to go potty and she ran over to the neighbor's yard to eat bread he tossed out for the birds. Mama yelled and yelled, but had to go get her and bring her back. I tell Trudy that she better not run away, cause somebody might dognap her! Maybe tell Arrow that, see if it helps.

i think arrow just had too much energy to burn...

is vital to find a secure fence up place for him to run around everyday....or else, he'll turn crazy

Missy sent that picture to her team mates. Made them laugh! hehe.

I am a bit like arrow, I will try to run run away when I see the gate open but somehow, they are fast enough to catch me. Crap.
